A fantastic antique Georgian Scottish carnelian intaglio solid 9k gold eagle signet ring for the Munro clan, the intaglio dating to the 18th century, the ring setting dating to the mid 20th century. The Munro clan was formed by an Irishman Donald Munro, who came over to Scotland in the 11th century and formed the clan in the Highlands. In 1314 Robert Munro led the clan in support of Robert the Bruce at the Battle of Bannockburn in their fight for Scottish Independence. The clan’s most famous son was James Monroe, the fifth President of the United States (1817-1825) who was the last President of the Founding Fathers. This incredible ring is a wonderful and rare find with a beautifully carved 18th century carnelian intaglio showing an eagle rising with outstretched wings and open beak, the intaglio with such fine details even individual feathers have been depicted, reversed carved above the eagle are the words ‘Dread God’, the Munro clan’s motto reflecting their belief in fearing the wrath of God. The carnelian is bezel set in a solid 9k gold mid century setting with closed shoulders and a nice wide band-an amazing intaglio which looks fabulous on the finger! The inside of the ring has maker’s mark ‘C&W’ (probably for the London silversmith and jeweler Catchpole & Williams) and ‘.375’ for 9k gold. The ring tests for 9k gold. The ring is approximately a size 7. The carnelian measures approximately 20mm x 14mm across the face. The ring rises about 3mm above the finger and weighs approximately 8.2 grams. The ring is in general good condition with all over wear including around the bezel setting. The carnelian has general wear including a flea bite to one edge, the carving remains clear and pronounced. The gold ring setting has some scuffs and scratches which could be easily polished out if desired. The ring has been resized. Please check all the pictures.
