eBay Image information: Railroad Depot A Nearer View; Atlanta, Ga; November 1864 “The long blue line” is what the Union army’s supply wagons became known as. These distinctive wagons were used to bring supplies from the north further and further south. While it was faster to move equipment by rail, it was not always practical. The supply wagons could follow the army anywhere it needed. Drawn by both horse and mule, the wagons became an integral part of the war effort on both sides. Everything from clothing, to food, to ammunition was brought by wagon to the site of the battles. As the war progressed, these wagon trains constantly moved supplies to the front lines, to supply the hundreds of thousands of troops in the field. As Sherman’s men prepared to leave Atlanta on their “March to the Sea”, hundreds of these wagons were abandoned and subsequently some were used by civilians, to help evacuate the city. Looking closely, dozens of wagons can be seen littered in the railroad yard. Without a team of horses or mules to pull them, they would soon be part of the burning of Atlanta. Each image has been carefully restored to remove 150 years of wear, scratches, cracks and imperfections. Then each image has spent numerous hours being hand colored to recreate, as close as possible, the original scene as it may have appeared on the day it was taken. Hand coloring of images is a technique that dates to the very beginning of photography. There are many examples of period stereo view cards that were colored. With modern digital technology, the ability to color a photograph allows the image to move from a black and white photo with splashes of color, to photographs that duplicate as near as possible, life-like full color images. Each image was created from a scan of the original negative producing a brilliant digital image up to 100Mb in size for each half (total of up to 200 Mb for both images) of the image. After restoration and coloring, the size of the combined images grew to a staggering 1Gb in size before being commercially printed. After printing, each image is professionally mounted onto standard ‘Holmes’ size stereo card measuring 3 1/2″ x 7”.
