Yes, I said it & will stick with it. This is the Absolute Very-Best ! Grateful Dead New Year’s Eve Video ( DVD ) I have ever seen. It is digitally remastered ( Audio / Video ) beyond belief, and the Bonus Features ( DVD-2 ) are absolutely incredible. There aren’t a lot of options to date for G.D. New Year’s Eve Videos, but depending on what the future of the ” G.D. Video Vault ” holds — I’m inclined to believe that my claim of this as # 1 will still hold strong. 12/31/82 – 12/31/85 – 12/31/87 are other top-candidates that have brought fans plenty of joy over the years as well – but not quite like this. The emotional part about this performance is that it marked the Grateful Dead wishing a Musical ‘ Farewell ‘ to the Winterland Arena which they had graced with consistency dating back to 1966 !?! But the neat part about this show is that Bill Graham himself negotiated Live radio & T.V. broadcasts of this wonderful performance in the Bay Area, so the show was broadcast on KSAN ( Radio ) & also ( Very Thankfully ! ) on KQED Public Television. Since this was achieved, I’m certain it is the main ( and maybe only ) reason that we are treated to A +++ Pro-shot video footage of this Amazing ! Grateful Dead Show. Another thing that was so special in the constant evolution of the Grateful Dead was the fact that this night in a lot of ways appeared to be the ” Happy / Celebration ” portion of the inevitable farewell to both Keith & Donna Godchaux. They were no longer in the band following the February ’79 Oakland shows, and by the Spring Tour ( 4/22/79 ), Brent Mydland had joined the Band following his successful roles in both Silver & Bobby & The Midnites. This was indeed an ending of a Wonderful-Era for the Band & the Fans, and on this night they celebrate like there is no tomorrow. But actually, there was ‘ also ‘ a ” Tomorrow ” during this show because B.G.P. served ” Breakfast at Dawn ! ” for the Loyal Deadhead Faithful. Rumor has it that folks were leaving the Winterland right around 9-ish or 10-ish in the morning – so that marks a great night in itself.
