This is a rare vintage Airman pilot’s watch in very good condition. This watch dates from the 1960’s and was the watch of choice for many airline pilots. It was also the choice of many U.S. airmen serving in the Vietnam War. The watch has a 24 hour display meaning the hour hand only rotates once each day. The dial is black in this example although champagne and white dialled versions were also produced. There is an external bezel rotated by the bottom crown which enables you to keep time in another time zone. The date is shown at 3pm. The watch is a nice 36mm in diameter (excluding the crown) with 20mm lugs. The stainless steel case and plexi-crystal are in great shape for a 55 year old or so!. The watch has an automatic movement -It cases an A. Schild 1700/01 movement with 25 jewels. The dial configuration exhibits an external turning bezel for setting the time in a different time zone.. The dial is of course a 24 hour dial rather than the usual 12 dial in most watches. It takes little time to get used to and is in fact quite enjoyable when discussing the time with friends and colleagues! The movement has 25 jewels and a beat rate of 18,000 v.p.h. Like so many other vintage Airmen, the hacking mechanism is no longer present. These were simply damaged accidentally or simply removed by watchmakers during servicing as unbelievably they had no idea of the relevance of the little pin and wire which operated the mechanism. Without it of course the watch still functions normally! This particular Airman is interesting in that it represents many stages in the evolution of the model with 1967 representing a distinct point of change. The serial number on the case-back (915173) dates the watch to 1967. However, the watch exhibits characteristics from this turning point and naturally shows earlier features too –all changes do not occur in one sweep overnight of course. Earlier characteristics shown are the plain main crown, the absence of the Glycine logo on the dial and the use of the A. Schild 1700/01 movement (from 1967 on, Glycine introduced the A.Schild 1902/03 movement). The newer 1967 on features include a trapezoid date window, a pop off case-back, a tail end on the hour hand, an E.P.S.A compressor case and a PAT number of 314.050. All this adds to a most interesting vintage Glycine timepiece! These vintage Glycine watches rarely come up for sale and if they do, many are in bad shape. This example is in very good condition for its age with only the case-back showing some wear, often the case with vintage pieces as this obviously represents the point of contact, resulting in rubbing of the case-back. The watch I’m sure would have many stories to tell but rest assured it still functions exactly as Glycine intended all those years ago! The watch comes on a new brown leather strap and is presented in a recreation of the original Glycine wooden box of the 1960’s which complements the watch really well. There you have it -a fantastic vintage watch in great shape with a fabulous history. A rare opportunity to obtain a historic and interesting timepiece!
