Signed Native American Haida Gwaii (also known as the Queen Charlotte Island in British Columbia, Canada) carved argillite raven motif pendant set with a mother-of-pearl or abalone eye. Signed Raven – Calvin Bell – Haida B.C. on the reverse. Measures approximately 2 3/16” x 1 1/4” in size (excluding the loop) and the total combined weight is 16.2 grams. Born in 1950 in Massey, Haida Gwaii, he is a self taught artist. Carving exclusively in argillite since 1970, he has had works on display at the Museum of Antropology and the Vancouver Art Gallery in Vancouver, B.C. as well as the Seattle Art Museum in Washington, U.S.A. The raven symbolizes change in life, creativity, and humour. Haida artists have been carving this black slate or argillite stone for several hundred years and have the sole rights to the use quarry for carving. See condition description and photos above.
