Thanks for looking! ******************************************************************* Boonville was founded in 1818 and named for Jesse Boon, father of Ratliff Boon.[8] A post office has been in operation at Boonville since 1820.[9] Boonville was incorporated in 1858. President Abraham Lincoln studied law in Boonville. When Abraham Lincoln and his family moved from Kentucky to present-day Spencer County in 1816, their homestead was then considered to be within Boonville’s Warrick County boundaries. The future president frequently walked to Boonville to borrow books and watch local attorney John Brackenridge argue cases, thus earning Boonville the distinction of being “where Lincoln learned the law.” Boonville bears the family name of Ratliff Boon, Warrick County’s most illustrious citizen and public official. Whether or not it was named for Ratliff, as is generally stated, or for his father, Jesse (who is buried in Harpole Cemetery just West of Boonville),20210324_151903 or a son, as some historians assert, undoubtedly Ratliff Boon, born January 18th, 1781, was most influential in the establishment of Boonville and Boon Township. Ratliff Boon came to the Warrick county area in 1809, was commissioned a lieutenant in the territorial militia in 1812 and rose to Colonel of the Tenth Regiment in 1817. With the formation of Warrick County in 1813, he was the first county treasurer and was active in public life for 25 years. He was a member of territorial assembly and each house of the state legislature. He was Lieutenant governor of Indiana, 1819-1822, and was acting governorRatliff Boonof Indiana in 1822, from September 12 to December 4th. In the U.S. Congress he was a member of the House for six terms during 1825-1827 and 1829-1839. He was President Jackson’s “faithful among the faithless”. In 1839 he moved to Missouri. On November 20, 1844 Ratliff died and was interred in Riverview Cemetery, Louisiana, Pike County, MO. Ratliff Boon was said to be a cousin of Kentucky’s famed Daniel Boone. However, this has not been confirmed in any historical documents or genealogies.Boonville had existed as a community with a platted street system for 40 years before incorporation in 1858. A commission authorized by the Indiana Legislature in 1818 selected the present site of Boonville, to be the location of a new county for the revised Warrick County. Large areas of Warrick, on the east and west, had been ordered removed for the formation of Spencer and Vanderburgh counties, and a county seat nearer to the center of the reshaped county appeared to be more desirable that where I then was at Darlington, near the Ohio river about two miles east of the mouth of Cypress Creek. The first Courthouse 1851-1905 was located in the center of the public square amid many towering trees. The Courthouse was remodeled in 1904 and presently houses the Health Department, Veterans Affairs, Plain Commission, Commissioners offices, War Memorial 3. In its first 45+ years of incorporation Boonville was a town with a board of trustees. In 1906 it became a city governed by a mayor and common council. In 1958, Boonville completed a century of municipal government. It has been over 60 years since that centennial celebration and Boonville has continued to expand with new growth and a vibrant town square. Newburgh, Richland, Chandler ******************************************************************* Matches, Match Book, promotional matchbooks on record ever made, businesses and individuals have been placing their logos, slogans, and artwork on matchbook covers to promote their products and services. Matchbooks have been around since 1892, when Joshua Pusey patented the idea of paper matches, whose tips were dipped in a solution of sulphur and phosphorus and then stapled to a piece of cardboard. The Diamond Match Company promptly purchased Pusey’s patent (he remained Diamond’s attorney for the rest of his life), and in 1894, a company salesman named Henry Traute got his first order for 10 million matchbooks bearing ads for Pabst beer on their covers. An order for 30 million matchbooks from tobacco maker Bull Durham quickly followed, but despite this early link between matchbooks and advertisers, matchbook companies still expected people to purchase their products. The public balked, in no small part because the first matchbooks were actually quite dangerous—the friction strip was located inside the cover, right next to the rest of the matches. To help assuage the public’s fears, Traute had the friction strip moved to the outside of the matchbook and added the words “Close Cover Before Striking” to the cover. Widespread acceptance only came after Traute realized that if his matchbooks were given away for free, they could be used to sell other products. Soon matchbooks were offered to customers of tobacco products, or left in the ashtrays of coffee shops and motels for the convenience of diners and overnight guests. In most matchbook collections, only the match covers are collected. Phillumenists, as matchbook collectors are known, “shuck” matchbooks by carefully prying open the staple to remove the matches from the inside of the cover. These matches are then discarded and the covers are stored flat. The only exception to this procedure is for novelty or feature matchbooks, which are matchbooks whose sticks have also been printed. One of the earliest types of collectible vintage matchbooks were the ones produced for Wrigley’s gum, with designs by Otis G. Shepherd. Collectible, yes, but rare? About a billion were produced. Some phillumenists collect covers based on the company that made the matchbooks. In addition to Diamond, Atlas, D.D. Bean, Federal, Lion, Monarch, and Ohio all produced collectible covers and features. Many other collectors organize their covers based on category. For example, some people collect covers that have a date on them; others only seek out matchbooks produced for the 1933 or 1939 World’s Fairs. And then there are the covers for coffee shops and cafes. For some reason, match-cover art is particularly transcendent when it comes to matchbooks for places to eat. The graphics and colors are frequently rich and vivid. In a few glorious cases, covers were printed with full-length designs, so that when the cover is flattened and turned sideways, it resembles a small billboard for the eating establishment. Other categories of vintage matchbooks include the ever-popular “girlies,” matchbooks printed for all 242 Playboy clubs, and covers featuring different railroad lines and national parks. Thousands of matchbook designs were created during World War II—some covers were patriotic (“Buy War Savings Bonds and Stamps”), and others featured friction strips on caricatures of Adolph Hitler’s ample butt, with the words “Strike On Back Side” printed on the matchbook’s front. In 1962, government safety rules decreed that friction strips must be moved from the outside-front of a matchbook to the outside back, thus obviating the need for the famous phrase “Close Cover Before Striking.” For serious phillumenists, this one act signaled the end of the era of vintage matchbook covers. A matchbook is a small paperboard folder (known as a matchcover) enclosing a quantity of matches and having a coarse striking surface on the exterior. The folder is opened to access the matches, which are attached in a comb-like arrangement and must be torn away before use in contrast to a matchbox where the matches are loosely packed in the interior tray. The exterior of the matchcover is usually imprinted with a producer’s logo, often with artistic decorations, or serves as an advertising/promotional medium for the undertaking by which it is sold or given away. The ease of making matchcovers of different shapes also made them quite a popular cheap promotional item or anniversary souvenir. Manufacturing of matchbooks peaked during the 1940s and 1950s, then steadily declined because of the availability of disposable lighters and various anti-smoking health campaigns. Recently, matchbooks have begun to regain some of their popularity as a “retro” advertising item, particularly in high-end restaurants. Although paper matches were patented in the 1880s, an early paper match “folder” was patented in September 1892 by Philadelphia patent attorney Joshua Pusey. However, the matchbook as we know it was patented a few weeks later by Charles Bowman of Lebanon, Pennsylvania. Pusey challenged Bowman’s patent, but Bowman’s patent was upheld. Pusey sold his patent to the Diamond Match Trust in 1896 and then served as the company’s patent attorney. Bowman’s company, the American Safety Head Match Company of Lebanon, PA did not last long, and Diamond Match Co. adapted his design into their product, becoming the first mass-producer of paper matchbooks. Collecting of matchboxes, matchbooks, match labels and other match-related items is called phillumeny. A “matchcover”, or “matchbook cover”, is a thin cardboard covering that folds over match sticks in a “book” or “pack” of matches. Covers have been used as a form of advertising since 1894, two years after they were patented, and since then, have attracted people who enjoy the hobby of collecting. Many historians point to the Mendelson Opera as the first to use matchbooks for advertising purposes; they hand wrote their promotional information on blank matchbook covers made by the Binghamton Match Company between 1893/94. Inspired by the Opera’s innovation, Diamond Match salesman Henry Traute began approaching manufacturers to advertise their products on his company’s matches, promoting them as something that would be viewed by their users many times a day. Among the first companies to order advertising matchbooks were Pabst beer, American Tobacco Company and Wrigley’s Chewing Gum. He also encouraged his customers to give away matchbooks as a promotional item. Collectors are known as phillumenists, or “lovers of light”, and include people who have a shoe box or fish bowl filled with packs from local stores and restaurants, to serious collectors with covers organized in hundreds of different topics. In 2005, there were over 1800 active collectors in The Rathkamp Matchcover Society (The Voice of the Hobby Since 1941), spread over 20 countries worldwide. On September 22nd 2019 the highest price realized for a single matchbook was achieved. On eBay, a rare Lion Match Co. Safety First matchbook dated June 15,1927 celebrating Charles Lindbergh’s flight across the Atlantic sold for $6,100USD plus $12.95USD shipping. Two types exist, one with Captain Lindbergh, the other with Colonel Lindbergh. Lindbergh was promoted to Colonel the week prior to the dinner. It’s believed that the Captain Lindbergh matchbooks were discarded as obsolete and reissued with the Colonel Lindbergh designation. It is estimated 200 of these books were handed out at a dinner in his honor at the Astor Hotel in New York. At last count there were about twelve known to exist. Patents
