The date was placed on a raised portion of the coin's design, making it susceptible to wear and tear over the years.The dates on these Buffalo nickels wore off mainly due to their location on the coin.All dateless Buffalo nickels did, at one time, have a visible date on the coin, but wear and excessive handling caused the numbers to wear away.During the great depression, the buffalo nickel was more commonly used than any other denomination since the penny was too inexpensive and the rest of the coinage was hoarded for its silver content. Buffalo nickels, officially known as the Indian Head nickel, were minted from 1913 to 1938.
