This antique putty-grey, salt-glazed ceramic bottle has the standard ginger beer shape produced during the 1890-1925 period. It is cylindrical, with an angular shoulder; the neck is conical, short and straight showing a swollen lip with a flat, narrow top, and a screw thread on the inside (the original stopper is missing). The bottom is unglazed while the remainder is covered inside and out with a colorless liquid glaze, giving the bottle a shiny appearance. The surface has navy blue printed graphics reading: Pink’s Ltd. ‘None Nicer’ Brand Ginger Beer, Guaranteed Brewed, Chichester, England.” In 1890, Anne Pink started her business in Chichester following the success of her home-brewed ginger beer; the company would last more than 100 years. The “None Nicer” logo was true to its word, and the product could be bought in local supermarkets until the late 1970s. Later Pink’s was only available in pubs. The bottle, itself, also has an interesting story. It starts with a rather smudged and indistinct (see photo) impressed oval on the lower part of the side wall containing the words: PRICE 10 BRISTOL. Although it might seem a bit confusing, this impressed mark refers not to the cost of the product, but it is a maker’s mark for the historic Bristol pottery which by 1906 had become Price, Powell & Co. A 19th century source describes the firm in this manner: “The old stoneware of Bristol manufacture has been known far and wide, and Messrs Price, Sons, and Co. are one of the oldest of the existing firms, they having absorbed two or three of the oldest potteries in the city, and the family of the present firm have been connected with the pottery for nearly a century. The improved Bristol stoneware illustrated by their exhibits at Stand 45, and noticeable for the beautiful glazing of the surface – specially excelling in this respect the production of other towns – is a Bristol speciality; and even when initiated elsewhere it is always known as ‘Bristol ware’. The improvement consists in its being so highly glazed and vitrified that it has all the advantages of the smooth surface of glass incorporated with the strong body of stoneware. This quality specially commends it to the large firms who now produce immense quantities of jams and preserves [not to mention drinks, such as ginger beer].” Ceramic bottles were always more expensive than glass but in their heyday (say 1825-1925), prior to the wide spread use of refrigeration, they could keep their contents cooler than glass for long periods. Scientifically, the evaporation of water from the outer surface of the ceramic bottle removed heat from the inside and created a cooling effect on the contents. Certainly, Anne Pink’s customers found that when her ginger beer came in a #10 (the bottle size) Price-made bottle from Bristol, there truly was “None Nicer”.
