Antique Dunlap & Co (New York) Collapsible Opera Top Hat in Original Box — from a Richmond, Virginia store All of the art work and collectibles being sold by Adams-Byrd Fine Art & Antiques have been collected and selected one at a time by the proprietor, an art historian with many years of training and experience in university art history departments, museums, galleries, and historic sites both in the U.S. and abroad. The business has been based in the Washington, D.C. area for many years. The art and collectibles that we are offering to eBay buyers are special and unique pieces that have been carefully “curated” by us. This fine antique collapsible “FASHIONABLE OPERA HAT” was made by Dunlap & Co. for O. H. Berry & Co. in Richmond, Virginia. The top hat is in very good condition, well protected by the original box. The oval box has suffered from wear and tear over many years, but it is still a fabulous collector’s item itself. The hat has a black grosgrain ribbon with a flat bow on one side, and the edge of the brim has grosgrain ribbon trim. The lining is black with red trim. The information inside is printed in gold. There is one very small spot where the stitching along the edge of the lining has come undone. There is almost no evidence at all on the hat of handling and wear. The top of the hat box has interesting information about Dunlap & Company’s offices, retail locations and factories. The WHOLESALE OFFICE & AGENCY DEPARTMENT was at 180 Fifth Avenue in New York. The retail stores were on Fifth Avenue in New York, on Broadway in New York, on Chestnut Street in Philadelphia, and on State Street in Chicago. They had factories and silk mills at three locations in Brooklyn. All of the street addresses are included on the lid. The box is black with gold trim. The lid of the oval box still has the brass carrying handle and its string. The perimeter design includes gold bands and a Greek key design. The box is lined in a printed paper with a small rust color design on an off white / ivory paper. The box is approximately 13″ x 11 1/4″ and 3 5/8″ tall at the ends and 2 3/4″ tall at the center of each side. The hat brim is approximately 11 7/8″ x 9 1/2″. Sitting on a flat surface the hat is about 6″ tall. At the top it is about 7 1/4″ x 8″. Inside it is about 6 1/2″ x 8″ (side to side and front to back) measuring from the seam of the underside of the brim and the lining. The approximate measurement around the inside of the brim (along the seam of the lining) is about 22″. This antique hat made in New York City is a wonderful display piece that you can also wear — since the hat is in very good condition! The box itself is an interesting document from the history of the clothing / accessories / haberdashery business in New York. It is also an interesting Virginia collectible since it was made for the O. H. Berry & Co. store in Richmond, Virginia.
