This 1975 serigraph by Jose Rosa Castellanos was made to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture. It is in good condition and has never used. It has slight age spots on the back of the paper that do not affect the artwork. It has some age spots on the left side of the yellowing white border and a 1/2 tear on the right side of the white border (See photo). The white border is yellowing due to age. (#64/Bx1) Rosa Castellanos customarily uses the letter “R” or backwards spelling of his last name as his signature. It’s on the plate (See photo). BIO: Jose Rosa Castellanos was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1939. A painter and printmaker, he studied drawing and commercial drawing at Central High School in the Santurce neighborhood. He entered the art world with painter Rafael Tufi~no, who offered free guitar lessons to children and young people in the San Jose public housings projects. Rosa Castellanos developed his learning in graphic arts with Tufi~no at the Department of Education’s Community Education Division, at the Campeche Workshop Gallery led by Domingo Garcia in San Juan, and with Lorenzo Homar at the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture’s Printmaking Workshop. When Homar retired in 1973, Rosa Castellanos became its director and was there until 1986, where he perfected his mastery of silkscreen media. He’s known for capturing Puerto Rico’s popular culture such as life in a bar, dancing, politics and religiousness. In the seventies, he developed a style in which he’d integrate texts into his art, especially around the edges of his works.
