MotorsportMemorabilia 1986 Grand Prix commemorative cover signed JOHNNY DUMFRIES 1986 was a closely fought season with the Williams-Honda FW11s of Nigel Mansell and Nelson Piquet leading most laps and winning 9 races but Alain Prost in the McLaren-TAG Porsche MP4/2B took the drivers? title when Mansell burst a tyre when leading the last race at Adelaide.Williams easily won the Constuctors? Championship with McLaren second and Lotus third. The MCM artwork depicts Alain Prost?s McLaren- TAG Porsche MP4/2C sandwiched between Nigel Mansell and Nelson Piquet in the Williams-Honda FW11s.The second special is autographed by JOHNNY DUMFRIES who made his start in 1980, driving karts, and upgraded to Formula Ford in 1981. His ability proven, he moved to F3 with Dave Morgan, two years later. In 1984 was the British F3 champion, driving a Ralt -Volkswagen for Dave Price Racing. He finished the season with 106 points and scored 10 wins. He came close to the double in 1984 but ultimately finished second in the European Formula 3 Championship on 53 points, Ivan Capelli taking the title on 60 points. With 4 wins, he finished ahead of Gerhard Berger. For 1985 he split his driving between an Onyx-March and a works Lola in the inaugural F3000 International Championship; he was also employed by Ferrari as a test driver. By the end of the season, he had tested GP cars for Brabham, McLaren, Lotus, Williams as well as his Ferrari duties. He was well-prepared for F1 debut with Lotus in Brazil and achieved a credible 11th place on the grid and set fourth fastest lap. Some mid-race confusion in the Lotus pits meant that he was unlucky not to score points in his premier GP. He drove a solid race at the new Hungaroring track for the inaugural Hungarian GP and converted 8th position on the grid into a 5th place finish. He bowed out of GP racing by finishing a fine 6th and scoring his third championship point at Adelaide. Politics demanded that Satoru Nakajima took his place when Lotus struck a deal for Honda engines. From 1987-90, he performed test driving for Benetton, as well as participating in endurance car racing. The undoubted highlight was the 1988 Le Mans 24-hour race win in the TWR-Silk Cut Jaguar, co-driving with Jan Lammers and Andy Wallace. He also spent the 1988 / 89 seasons driving a Toyota for the TOM’s Taka-Q team a 7th place at Jarama and 8th at Spa-Francorchamps were his best results. In recent years, he has established himself as a talented artist.Note: Johnny Dumfries was the name used by The Earl of Dumfries during his Formula 1 racing; he has since become the Marquis of Bute but prefers to be called Johnny Bute, without title.
