Item 483759 ◊ 1880s Lot of Two (2) Chromolithograph Advertising Cards With a “Birds of a Feather” Theme Very rare and fascinating “1880s Lot of Two (2) Chromolithograph Advertising Cards With a “Birds of a Feather” Related Theme.” Neither of these cards were used for by an advertiser. Before the advent of color ads in newspapers and magazines, businesses relied on trade cards to get the word out. They were produced by a Design Company with a blank back. Later when a business was ready to advertise themselves, they went to a Printing Co. and had their had their verbiage printed on the front and/or the back. Trade cards like these didn’t always have anything to do with the product being sold. The point was to catch the attention of the reader. Even in those days trade cards were collectible because of the beautiful Chromolithographic designs. So often they would end up in scrapbooks. The chromolithograph trade cards and booklets retain their brilliant colors to this day because of the way they were created.The first card shows a lovely young girl, sitting in a meadow of wild flowers, feeding the birds. The card measures approx. 4-1/2″ X 2-3/4″ (≈ 11.5 cm X 7 cm.) This attractive card is in excellent condition. The corners and edges are solid, with no surface wear. One unexpected thing is there is a rosebud sticker in the upper left-hand corner, but it blends in very well with the design on the card. There is some glue residue on the back, from when it was stored in a scrapbook.The second card also has a bird design … a BIG robin on a background of roses. This card is also decorated in gold-gilt and is embossed. The bird is sitting on a white box. A previous owner wrote the words “Dear little boy” in the box. It measures 4-1/2″ x 3″ (≈11 cm. X 7.5 cm.). This card is also in excellent condition. The edges are strong and the surface is clean, but the corners are a tiny bit bumped. The back is also very clean, except for a small amount of glue residue.
